Sun broke through the extensive number of clouds lingering overhead, leaving at beautiful scene on the battle field ahead. It was perfect for a showdown in the light, no? The Trainer knew what had to be done and ordered his Pokemon to attack the wild Koffing before them, letting the tides of battle happen as they please. The PokeMorph and his Turtwig were already near Route three when an untamed Koffing came from the tree above. Well, the funny thing is that our story doesn’t take place near Route three, but contrarily happens in the arena.
The hero of our story, Dante, walked up to the entrance of the Training arena, Charmander right next to him. They were here to, of course, train for their Gym Battle, wherever it was. Sad to say, Dante’s partner wasn’t as high a level as he should be, which would cause troubles for them in the long run. Charmander knew this himself, which is why he literally dragged his Trainer to this place. Apparently, fighting others in this place was supposed to help level your Pokemon up quickly, which was sort of hard to believe.
They had already gotten admission, so now they were waiting on their opponent. It was quite likely that it would be pretty strong, but it would be nothing that Charmander couldn’t handle. The sun was sort of covered, probably caused by a rain cloud. ”WILL DANTE AND CHARMANDER PLEASE REPORT TO THE TRAINING ARENA! THANK YOU!” It was always lovely to hear that voice over the intercom, having the loud booming sound pulse through your ear drums. This was all sarcasm, of course.
Well, the match was on and the doors unlocked, allowing the Trainer and his Pokemon step through the threshold. Loud cheering could be heard outside, which set off a red flag. ”Charmander… We’re going to be watched by more than just the other Trainer and their Pokemon. You ready?” The fire Pokemon nodded energetically, running towards the exit of the hallway they were in. Dante sighed goodheartedly and ran with the darn thing, entering into the field.
Stands were lined up in the corners with loud spectators waving their arms and cupping their mouths to make themselves even louder. This was an overwhelming sight for both Pokemon and Trainer, but they still waved to the immense crowd, attempting to get the people on his side. That’s when the next competitor waltzed in like this was just a fancy, formal meeting. A grin was plastered across her face, her eyes darting towards the crowds on either side. Beside this woman was an Azumarill, a Pokemon that put Dante and his Charmander at a disadvantage. How pleasant…
This woman had a stiff body, her head carrying a short ponytail of blonde hair. She wore a jacket that had Pokeballs stitched to the front in a straight line from below the breast line and down. Her lower body was covered in a pair of tight jeans, coupled with a pair of black shoes. Dante thought he didn’t know fashion! This woman’s outfit was almost laughable, probably enough to make his Charmander cry in joy.
The crowd continued to cheer, which led the intercom to play a message to the entire stadium. ”WELCOME, TRAINERS! THIS BATTLE WILL BE ONE ON ONE, PITTING A CHARMANDER AGAINST AN AZUMARILL! I HAVE MY MONEY ON THAT AZUMARILL, DON’T YOU GUYS!? WE’LL SEE HOW WELL THIS CHARMANDER AND ITS TRAINER HOLD OUT AGAINST A REIGNING CHAMPION OF THE TRAINING ARENA! GO!” The crowd yelled in excitement as the battle finally started.
”Ladies first! I insist.” The female Trainer didn’t seem to really care who went first, but she did seem to loosen up after this announcement. She seemed confident, maybe a little overconfident. ”Go, Azumarill! Use Water Gun!” So, they started out with a water based attack… hooray! Not too much of a problem. The field was filled with giant rocks of all sorts, along with trees and tall grasses. Dante wouldn’t let such a young female bring Charmander down so quickly! ”You, Charmander! Dodge behind that rock and wait for further orders!”
The lizard Pokemon did just that and dove straight for the boulder, now safe from the water attack. The expression on the woman’s face didn’t seem like the pleased one. She stared Dante down with her cold, brown eyes, leaving him itchy. ”Jump over the rock and use Water Gun again!” Now this battle was getting interesting! Dante’s eyes kept a close watch on the Azumarill’s movements, waiting for the perfect chance to counter.
Right when the Azumarill’s ears were coming over the rock’s edge, Dante did something odd. ”Charmander! Flip over and use the flame on your tails to hit Azumarill between the ears!” At the exact moment, that flaming tail shot straight up, smacking that water Pokemon’s head with it. Along with the feeling of a burning ember, the rabbit-like Pokemon fell on its face, a small dirt cloud circling where the impact was. ”Charmander! Now’s our chance! Use scratch!” The fire starter shot forward with its claw, victory soon to be the disadvantaged group’s, but something happened.
The opponent’s tail flipped around, smacking the lizard out of the way. That’s when the woman laughed loudly, making the crowd silent. ”I’m the reigning champion of this arena! You can’t possibly defeat me, especially with that old Charmander!” That lady didn’t just say what Dante just thought she did! Charmander brushed himself off, a bruise forming on its cheek. A fire burned in its eyes, the Pokemon wanting revenge on this water Pokemon and its Trainer. No one called it “old”, ever!
”Charmander, don’t give up! We can do this!” The Azumarill didn’t even need its Trainer’s commands to do anything! This battle was beginning to turn out like a wild battle. It turned around, eyes flaring up as its gaze met with Charmander’s. No doubt that this Pokemon was using Tackle, its body thrusting forward. There had to be some aspect that Dante could utilize to win this battle, but no matter how hard he thought, nothing came to mind… Until the sight of giant ears caught his attention.
Weren’t Azumarill able to hear things very clearly? As the Tackle started, Dante shot his arm forward and snapped. ”Charmander! Dodge the attack and use Growl into its ear!” Charmander sneered and swiftly sidestepped, getting out of the way of the attack. As Dante commanded, the Growl was sent straight through the Azumarill’s ears, making the Pokemon near deaf. Now, the Pokemon was at a disadvantage. Without the ability to hear clearly, it wouldn’t be able to hear any interesting plan from its Trainer.
As the Azumarill landed roughly into the dirt, it stared forward, looking as if it were going to murder someone out of random. ”A-Azumarill! Use Water Gun and follow up with a Tackle!” The Azumarill couldn’t hear anything except for a muffled sound, so nothing went through. ”We’ve got ‘em now, Charmander! Great job!” Azumarill could see the smiles on both of its opponent’s faces, growing very angry as of now.
Out of blind rage, the Azumarill darted forward with a Water Gun. The fire lizard dodged quickly, but its entire left arm was hit by the water attack, which was super effective, even with a lower attack. It was all part of their plan, though. Charmander had been standing in front of one of those big boulders mentioned before, waiting for his chance to dodge. The water Pokemon was sent forward with nothing to stop it, slamming face first into the boulder.
”Here’s our chance, Charmander! Go up and use Scratch!” The battle was over now, as the fire Pokemon rushed forward with its right arm cocked back. The crowd stayed silent as the Scratch attack was used in an uppercut form, sending Azumarill backwards in the air. Suspense was killing everyone as the water Pokemon glided through the air. When it landed, there was no suspense creating dust cloud, but instead, it was the sweet image of victory.
The judge of the match stood in a sort of awe, but quickly realized his job and raised a green flag. ”Azumarill is down! The winner is Dante and his Charmander!” The crowd stayed silent, but when the first clap from a little girl echoed through the arena, many followed and, soon enough, it seemed like the whole world would know about the almost impossible victory. Charmander, the happiest it has been since Dante first picked it up, ran straight for his Trainer, leaping into the air to high five Dante.
Dante followed through and picked the Pokemon up, placing the semi-light Pokemon on his left shoulder. Both of the victors waved to the crowd, but the female Trainer growled, returning Azumarill to its Pokeball. Some reigning champion she was, eh?
