Hakira walked casually up to the laboratory door, looking for all the world like she was supposed to be there. She had wasted no time in arriving early that morning, and though she certainly did look like she had just spent the night in a ditch, it didn't mean she wasn't determined to vehemently deny it should someone ask. She lifted a hand, preparing to knock, then thought the better of it and simply let herself inside. If the door wasn't locked, that meant people were free to come and go anyway, right?
She peered around the room as she entered, being just respectful enough to at least remain in the entry way until she was greeted. The professor had something she wanted, after all; she didn't want to go stepping on any toes before she got her partner. She paused to cough, then raised her slightly raspy voice in question.
"Hello? Anyone up an' about? I'm here to pick up a starter, if ya've got the time."

There was a rather loud crash from not too far away, accompanied by some unintelligable exclimations in a female voice. "Just a minute!" finally came from the stream of angry words. A moment later the short, frizzy haired Professor stormed into view. She held a broken vase in one hand and towed a repantant looking Mankey by the ear with her other.
"I've told you time and time again, you canNOT pracitce karate moves on the furnit... oh hello." She trailed off from rebuking the fighting-type when she spotted Hakira. "So sorry to keep you waiting. I suppose you are here to get a pokemon. Did you have anything particular in mind?" She let the Mankey go, her glare clearly telling him that she would finish this later. The monkey sulked and quickly made his escape, dissappearing into the depths of the lab.

Hakira giggled at the Mankey, wishing she could be around for the time when he got lectured. It would probably be hilarious. Such is life, however, to constantly miss out on great sources of entertainment. There would be other opportunities. She moved to answer the professor's question.
"I have a couple in mind, but I'm havin' a bit o' trouble decidin' which ta go with. If I list a couple, do ya think ya could release them here so I can get a good idea of their personalities? S'alright if I just gotta pick, but I'd like ta take special care this time, it bein' my starter an' all," she offered. "The ones I'd like ta see are Torchic, Chikorita, Piplup, and Cyndaquil."

"Of course you can meet them. It's part of lab policy. Wait here, and I'll be right back." She dissappeared down a different hall from the way the Mankey had gone. She was back before Hakira had time to miss her, leading a small group of pokemon. She let them mill about the room while she went over to her desk rifled through the drawers, producing a couple of pokeballs and adding their contents to the throng.
The male Torchic puffed up his chest, trying to look intimidating as he advaced on the female chikorita. She gave him a brief glance before letting out a playful growl and promptly pounced on the little fire-bird. The two of them rolled past the female Torchic who tried to scold them in a bossy, superior voice, clearly telling them how immature they were being infront of a guest. The male chikorita looked half-asleep. He drooped his head to rest it on the shoulder of the female piplup, who stroked his leaf companionably and crooned in a motherly tone. The male piplup bounced right up to Hakira, begging for attention. He seemed a little haughty and tugged on her clothes when he thought she was looking elsewhere. There was also a female cyndaquil who was very shy. She ducked her head and hid behind Professor Apple Blossem's legs, occasionally peaking out at Hakira. The last pokemon, a male cyndaquil, stood out from the others. Instead of having a dark blue-black hide, his was and orange-ruby color that sparkled and shimmered as he walked. The shiny fire-type hovered nearby, wanting to approach Hakira but seeming to wait for an invitation.

Hakira was quite pleased with most of the group; this was going to be harder than she thought! The male Torchic and female Chikorita seemed to be quite the pair, but she wondered how well one would do without the other. They seemed like good pals, and she was loathe to separate the two. The bossy female Torchic was incredibly amusing; she seemed like she would be easy to mess with and tease, and that could be fun in its own way.
Both the male Chikorita and female Piplup were immediately out. While there was something to be said about the way they both seemed completely relaxed and sure of themselves, the pair lacked the energy and enthusiasm she was looking for in a starting Pokemon. This male Piplup, though... Oh, she took to him instantly. There was something instinctively charming in the way he begged and demanded her full attention, like a child who was a little too attached to his parents. Perhaps he was calling to the mother inside of her.
She resisted the urge to pick the male Cyndaquil right away; he was shiny, rare, and that was very appealing. Still, she didn't want to be biased. The others were just as good as he was, and it wasn't really fair to pick him based on his looks. She thought his hesitancy was rather cute, and with a grin she signaled to him.
"Oi, Ruby-locks," she called, amiably poking fun at his odd coloration, "It's a'ight ta come over, I dun bite, promise. Think ya could get yer friend there," she pointed towards the even shyer female Cyndaquil, "Ta come over, too? I'd like ta meet ya two properly as well."

The shiny cyndaquil let out a soft squeel of delight. He beckoned for his female counterpart to come over as he strode up to Hakira. He stretched up to plant a gentile kiss on her fingers, bowing as low as his little red body would allow. The female cyndaquil seemed to take heart in his confidence and shuffled forward. She blushed and waved tenatively at Hakira, standing up straight with perfect posture so the trainer could look her over.
The male pipulp pouted. Hakira couldn't possibly want one of those two fire-freaks when he was right here and irresistably cute! He folded his flippers across his chest and sulked for a moment before an idea came to him. He rolled forward into a shaky headstand, trying to recapture Hakira's gaze.

"Oh man, you guys are really making this too hard for me!" she chuckled at their efforts, greatly approving of their enthusiasm.
The male Cyndaquil was ultra cute, and apparently quite the gentleman, judging from his low bow and the kiss he'd planted on her hand. Piplup was obviously doing his best to outshine the fire types though, judging by his (literally) over-the-top efforts to win her over. And aww, how cute! It seemed like all that female Cyndaquil really needed was some encouragement in order to stand out and be her best... It was pretty safe to say that Hakira had narrowed it down to these three.
"I'd take all o' yuns if'n I could, really," she started, "But I dun think the nice professor lady over there would really appreciate the act of thievery it would take ta get ya out. So..." her face scrunched up and her brow furrowed; she was really thinking about this. "The little missy here," she pointed to the female Cyndaquil, "If it's alright, I'd really like to have ya with me fer my journey!"
She cast an apologetic gaze over towards the Pokemon she hadn't picked, silently saying sorry. Maybe it was a mistake to pick so many; she hadn't expected them all to get their hopes up like that. She especially felt bad about that male Piplup; he'd be her second pick in a heartbeat.
"Don't y'all worry now. There'll be another trainer what comes along that'll love ya a whole lot more than I already do! An' that's sayin' somethin'!"

The male Piplup looked heartbroken. He gave a sad little croon and fell out of his headstand and onto his back. How couldn't she pick him! He was the best! It was a crime, a disaster that he hadn't been chosen! He got up to his feet solemnly, turning away from the male Cyndaquil who tried to comfort him. The Cyndaquil looked back at Hakira, not sadly, as you'd expect, but happily! Happy that his friend had gotten chosen, and happy that-hey, somebody was choosing pokemon at all! Professor Apple Blossom smiled at Hakira's choice, but frowned at the Piplup's demeanor. She gave him a soft pat on his smooth head, hoping to make him feel a bit better. It seemed to work. He turned, puffed out his chest at the girl in front of him, a proud look on his face, as if to say 'See what you missed?' This Piplup would be proud and showing off for another trainer- another day. The gentlemanly Cyndaquil smiled, chuckling a bit to himself. He turned back to Hakira, bowing low yet again, and giving her a nod of his head- good day, take care of my friend, there! Professor A.B chuckled. "This is such a motley crew of pokemon, don't you think?" She turned back to her desk, walking behind it to rummage about and pull out a small pack, filled to the brim with items. She also grabbed a pokeball from a shelf on the wall -the female Cyndaquil's, of course- and came back to Hakira. "Here is your starter pack, full of items to help you start your journey! Here is this Cyndaquil's pokeball, I hope you two succeed in your endeavors." With a sagely nod, she handed the bag and the pokeball to the girl in front of her. Congratulations! You recieved a pokemon:#155- Cyndaquil, female, Lvl 5 Moves: Leer, Tackle, Smokescreen You also recieved: Pokeball x10 Potion x2 Antidote x1 Burn Heal x1 Ice Heal x1 Awakening x1 Parlyz Heal x1 Revive x1

"Buncha characters, that lot," she agreed.
Hakira felt a twinge of guilt as the Piplup departed, but knew he would find a trainer who adored him soon. She gave a little wave to the gentlemanly Cyndaquil as well, having a distinct feeling that a more classy female trainer would suit him perfectly. Drifting across her mind was an image of him and a young brunette in a fashionable red dress sitting down to tea, using her unusually large parasol to shield them from the hot afternoon rays. She giggled at the scene, letting it float away as quickly as it had come. She didn't have much time to dwell anyway, as she soon discovered a heap of items dumped in her lap. She fumbled clumsily to catch them, berating herself for not paying attention. The professor had begun to speak to her again, but whatever she had said Hakira obviously missed while she was off daydreaming. Thinking quick, she came up with a vague response, hoping it matched whatever A.B. just uttered.
"Well, uh, thanks!" she grinned, packing the items away in her backpack, "'Preciate it, fer sure! If that's all, then..."
She looked to the little female Cyndaquil on the floor, and with a rare soft smile picked her up and cradled the little fire type in her arms.
"I'm gonna end up spoilin' ya ta bits, aren't I? Ah well, s'worth it! Agin, thanks fer all yer help, A.B.!" she nodded, abbreviating her name without even realizing that's what she preferred to be called, "We'd best be off before they catch up to us. Wouldn't want ta make a mess o' yer lab."

Professor A.B. waved her hand dismissingly. "Don't thank me, I should be thanking you for taking a Pokemon to train!" With a nod, the woman smiled. "Good luck to you both!" She watched them leave.
