There were times in anyone's life where things dind't quite go to plan. There were times when things went very well to plan, and there were times where not everything you wanted happed. Karla was stuck in one of the later times. She did enjy cooking, and the food you got to eat by default, but pokemon training was her dream, and she dind't want to give up that dream. So, she'd gone to the lab. Everyone got their starter pokemon from here, right? Or at least in this region. She was wating on Togi to be sent over from her father, a gift for her journey. She adored the timid little Togepi, but she wanted to do things right. To start a journey you got a starter pokemon. Usually of course, this was when you were thirteen or a little older, but she'd spent too long being a chef, so she was ninteen as she did this.
Karla took a deep breath as she looked at the door, holding her bag in hands that were clutched in front of her. Well, this was exciting. All logic dictated that she should be excited and happy at this occasion. She was really scared rather witless. It was a strange emotion to experience when she was about to set off on her life's dream. She knew that was fine. Afterall, she'd given up a stable and thriving career for this, if she failed then she would never get the opportunities she'd already had again. So she codln't fail. Which meant picking out a brilliant first partner. Togi did love her, so she was safe there, and she loved Togi. Karla had grown up with the Togepi, and they were a good team. However...Karla knew that she wasn't going to win very many fights with the pokemon. So she needed another one. Which meant she had to come here. Taking another deep breath, Karla pushed her glasses fuether onto her face before knocking onto the door. Well, it was around lunch time, so the Professer ought to be up. [/blockquote]

Professor Apple Blossom (A.B. to most) was sitting at her desk re-checking Pokemon inventories on a sheet when there was an oh-so-curious knocking at her door! The woman looked up quickly, a relaxed woosh coming from the red frizz that was her hair.
"Oh, it's open!" It was probably a trainer, or, well, trainer-to-be. A.B. stood up, brushing her pearly white lab coat into its usual pressed, bleachy perfection.
The woman wasn't tall in the least bit, and it was evident as she stepped out from behind her desk, and started to walk towards the door. She mused quietly, stopping a few steps away from the entrance. The Professor readjusted her glasses.
"Oh, I wonder what Pokemon we'll be giving out today!"

The voice made her jump, and quickly look around. No one was there, leaving the voice to have come form only one other source: inside the building. The door was open, but....Did she really want to go in? This was her dream, and she was giving so much up for it. She could walk away now and her job at the restaurant would be waiting for her. But then her parents would be sending her Togi for no reason, and she'd feel like she'd dissapointed herself. The good things in life always cost something, that was why they were good, because you either worked for them, or you gave yup something to get them. So, if she realy wanted this, the logical thing to do was walk forwards and take what she wanted. Not by force of course, that was pointless and something she really didn't want to do.
Karla took a deep breath, stepping forwards with her eyes closed to push the door open. Take a deep breath, and go for it. She peered around the door before stepping in, jumping when she saw that there was a woman a few steps in, most likely watching her. With a quick half bow Karla spoke. "I'm here for a starter pokemon, I...I really don't mind what sort of pokemon," she said in a hurried tone, straightening but looking at the floor. It didn't really matter. You could win a battle against a rock type with an electric type if the electric type was strong enough. All that mattered was training and how you treated the pokemon.
"I'll take one of the ones that's been here the longest," she burst out, finally looking up at the woman, who she hoped was the professor here. She hoped she wasn't coming across too oddly. She flushed, coughing slightly before finally adding, "Please."

Professor Apple Blossom smiled sweetly. The girl in front of her seemed a bit nervous, as she had glanced around the door before even entering. When the messy-haired woman heard Karla's quick words, the Professor's theory was proved.
"I'm here for a starter pokemon, I...I really don't mind what sort of pokemon,"
Professor A.B smiled widely, eyes glittering. Not many people didn't have some choice, or want something specific. It was a refreshing feeling. The fact that Karla wasn't picky got her a few points from A.B, seeing as how that probably meant that the Pokemon would be more of a companion, battling, yes, but they wouldn't just battle. This girl would be a trainer who treated her Pokemon well! She was so sure.
Oh, how A.B hated the days when somebody would run in, demand a specific Pokemon, and throw a fit if they were out of that one. They'd run out, without even thanking her for the Pokemon they did get. Every creature the Professor gave out had potential, be they lazy, outgoing, or unintimidating. The Professor was proud of her Pokemon, and found their varying personalities interesting! If they were all the same, well, what fun would that be?
"I'll take one of the ones that's been here the longest,"
Professor Apple Blossom nearly laughed. She nearly hugged the teen in front of her. It was just as she had thought! Something about this 19-year old made her day.
"Okay, then. No specific Pokemon, and one of those who has been here a long time. By the way, I'm Professor Apple Blossom," She held out a hand to Karla, grinning at the teen. "And you are?" The Professor was eager to know.

Karla had to admit, the Professor was unnerving her just a little bit. She had expected her to be more...business like. Instead the woman seemed rather more happy then Karla had imagined. She felt rather grumpy at herself. This woman wasn't like one of those critics in their suits who sat at the table with a perminant frown on their face, determinded to write something bad about the service or the food; which was what Karla had imagined A.B to be like. She almost blushed at that, embarrassed at such a big mistake, even if it had never been voiced.
But there was a feeling about this woman that unnerved her. It might have been the wide smile and the restrianed sort of person, but Karla was a little worried about the Professor. But she bowed again once the Professor began speaking. It paid to be calm in situations like this, and respectful. Where was the logic in ranting and screaming about something you wanted? The person might not give it to you if you wacted annoying and irresponsible. At the question karla looked up from her slight bow, staring at the hand for a moment. Of course, it was rude to leave them waiting, so she hesitantly raised one hand from the straps on her bag to shake the Professor's hand. Now of course, the bag was only in one hand, hanging at her side.
"Karla. Karla Monte. I...used to be a chef around here. It is a pleasure to meet you, Professor," she murmered, wondering idly at how odd it was to say that she used to be something. At one point, she'd thought that she'd be a chef forever. Obviously not. Well. She had this new pokemon to look forward to, and Togi, and a whole new adventure.

Professor Apple Blossom was extremely gratefull for Karla. After all, some of the Pokémon in here never got chosen. Everyone always went for Eevee and Pikachu. In her opinion, these people tended to only care about their Pokémon's appearance, rather than, as proper trainers should, their personality and moveset. Pokémon which were rarely picked, like Bulbasaur, could both inflict damage and cause status effects. Presently, she scurried off to select the Pokémon hardly anyone wanted.
When she came back, AB released five Pokémon from their Pokéballs for Karla to view. Firstly came said Bulbasaur. He seemed surprised that he was finally being let out as an option, almost falling over backwards at the sight of Karla. AB decided she should help Karla make a choice. "I haven't seen many of my Bulbasaur go. This little fella's been here the longest of all. Bulbasaur are handy for giving opponents status effects." she said.
Next up, a Squirtle. However, this was no ordinary Squirtle. She glimmered in the light, and her skin and shell were different colours than normal. She sniffed the air, seeming a little bored. "Squirtle are determined and tough. They have good defense and better than average attack, but are quite slow. This one, as you can see, is a shiny." AB said proudly.
Then came a Turtwig. He pawed the ground, as if nervous at being viewed and judged. "Turtwig are slow but sturdy. They can easily take hits and can be very effectionate, even though they might not look it." as if to prove the Professor's words true, Turtwig bowed at Karla.
The penultimate Pokémon was a Chimchar. She scratched her head, studying Karla expressionlessly. "I can never suss out why no-one picks Chimchar. I guess Monferno aren't the prettiest of Pokémon, but Infernape are very cool. They're fast and have a good moveset." AB said. Chimchar flashed Karla a winning smile.
Finally, last but not least, AB turned to the last Pokémon, another Water type. The Flapool grinned. She seemed very calm, highly intelligent and very friendly. Professor AB seemed to like her, anyway. "Flapool are exclusive to Airore. They're fast, fairly strong and evolve into a part flying type, so if you have the HM Fly just evolve this little angel." she concluded her discriptions. At last, AB turned to Karla again. "So, make your choice." she said.

Karla watched with a bowed head as A.B went to fetch the pokemon. She could barely dare to hope about what was coming out, and in truth it did not really matter. Even the weakest of pokemon, if treated right and trained right, could became as strong as the pokemon that looked tough and had the strongest moves. If used smartly, any pokemon could win a battle. She'd seen her mother defeat her father's water pokemon using a fire type pokemon; she wasn't about to put a pokemon down because of a type disadvantage, or because it didn't look like it wanted to fight. The fact that it didn't want to fight usually showed intelligance, since it would try to fight while gaining little to no damage, using it's own wits instead of relying on the trainers wits.
The five pokemon on offer were all unique anyway, as the Professor released each and everyone. Well, these were the...throw aways, for lack of a better term. The things no one else wanted. Karla couldn't see why. The Bulbasaur was...comical, but most likely just shocked. She guessed that he didn't see very many people, except for the Professor. He looked nice, strong. He was steady, she could see, and although those legs of his wouldn't give him much manouverability, the stat effects would be an undenirable advantage in a fight. Plus, he did need to get out of here. Karla crouched down in front of him, letting go of her bag to hold her hands in front of her, elbows resting on her knees. With a coo she held out a hand to him, head tilting.
The female Squirtle...Karla didn't like her. Yes, she was shiny, special if you will. But she apperaed arrogant. She might have just been bored with being shown and not picked, despite her...shiny status, but it sure looked like arrogance to Karla. The Professor seemed proud of her though, and they did seem like good pokemon in a fight. However, she was going to have to live with this pokemon, not just fight with it. No, not her.
The Turtwig. He was so vervous at being looked at. What would he be like in a fight, in public? Oh course, he would be the easiest to live with, but not the best in a fight. The general species was tough, nice to live with, but slow. This one though? He wouldn't be good in a fight without some serious training to get him over his confidence issues, and Karla wasn't all too good at confidence issues with other people. Her own mother hated holding parties, and all she could do was sit there and tell her she was being stupid. She flashed him a smile before looking back at the Bulbasaur, after she'd looked over at the last two pokemon of course.
The fire type starter. Well, she seemed...charismatic. The smile was good, at least. It showed character and friendliness, but...She didn't show much else, even Karla had to admit that. The others showed more of their personality off, this one just seemed to stand there. Of course, a good fighting pokemon, but would she be happy choosing a pokemon that she didn't know much about? Not really. However, it was true no one ever picked them, she didn't see many people with one, and ever her parents didn't have one.
Ah, now the Flapool. The perfect pokemon, perhaps. She was calm, which meant she was smart enough to realise nothing was going to happen to her, and the smile showed she was friendly. In other words, she would be a good companion, and a good fighter. For some reason, that put Karla off her perhaps a little bit. She wanted someone she could work with.
"Please..." Karla paused. Which one? Out of all of them, she liked the Tortwig and the Bulbasaur the most, though the Flapool might be nice. This was her life long pokemon, her first pokemon that was hers. It had to be right! "May I have...the Bulbasaur?"
OOC: i was watching 'lie to me' as i wrote this, so it's a little more calculating then normal.

ooc// I don't watch Lie to Me, but my parents say it's all right. Also, OMG HOLY MACARONI THAT'S LONG!
ic// Professor AB watched as Karla turned a calculative eye upon the five Pokémon presented as her options to choose from. She wondered what Pokémon she would decide to take. A lot of people would be so wowed by Squirtle's shinyness that they'd take her without giving a second though to the others. The Squirtle had, as proof, been here the least out of all of them. She watched as she dismissed the shiny almost immedietly. Thank goodness. The girl then had rounded on Bulbasaur and Flapool, and it was clear that she was finding it hard to choose between the two. Her eyes occasionally flicked towards the Turtwig, too. Well, it seemed that she, in the end, was a wise girl. AB broke into a smile as she said Bulbasaur. So did Bulbasaur. A look of amazement crossed his face, and it was clear he was over the moon.
The other Pokémon seemed a little disappointed, especially Flapool. However, you could only pick one Pokémon after all, and so it wasn't Karla's fault. AB quickly returned them to their Pokéballs. They would all find trainers eventually. The Bulbasaur leapt at Karla, grinning happily and laughing as he caught her scent. It smelt like herbs used in cooking. Bulbasaur liked herbs. He nuzzled her, looking as though Karla had been on a journey with him for ages, not a few seconds. AB laughed too. "Well, here's Bulbasaur's Pokéball, and here are your starter's items." she smiled, placing the various useful stuff in Karla's arms.

Karla sighed at the looks the other pokemon gave her, the dissapointment. Even the Squirtle looked unhappy at her choice, but then again, the Squirtle had looked rather dissapointed in everything around her. It was a good diea to not pick a pokemon like her, shint or not. She knew a lot of people would not have understood her choice to have left behind such a rare - and some people would think beautiful - pokemon. But arrogance was not a trait Karla encouraged, not at all. But a little ego never hurt anybody of course; however, the ammount that she had shown wasn't healthy, and could possibly get her hurt, even killed if she thought she could do something and she couldn't. The others though...The Flapool and the Turtwig...Karla did feel guilty at leaving them, but she couldn't help it.
The Bulbasaur's reaction made her more certain in her choice. He looked so shocked, but the smile was so happy. Karla smiled tentatively at him. He seemed nice, confident, but not overly so, and happy to be on the move. He wouldn't get bored with moving from one place to the other. They were all traits she needed in a pokemon, especially a starter that she might be with a while before another pokemon joined them. He obviously had patience, otherwise he'd have been a lot more unhappy when he'd been taken out. Edgier maybe.
And now he was hers. She had to feed him, take care of him, train him, talk to him, keep him company. Everything he wanted, she had to provide for. It was a big responsibility. But she was starting to sound like her mother. The Bulbasaur leaping onto her lap caught her off guard, she squeaked slightly, blushing instantly afterwards and gently patted him on the head, letting him nuzzle her as he liked. Did she smell nice or something?
"Oh, thank you, Professor." Karla stumbled over the words as she grappled with dragging her bag over and putting the items into the corrent pockets, putting the pokeball beside her so it wouldn't roll away, and the Bulbasaur on her lap. "Ah...Sorry, move over a litte?" The Bulbasaur grinned, mumbling a small sound before stepping off her lap, leaving his front two legs on her knees. "You need a name," she mumbled as she packed things away, "You were always last, so it should be a good one...Last?" The idea was a sound one. When people had come - if they'd come at all - to look at him, he'd always come out last to some other pokemon. Besides, at the smile and the laughter, and the Bulbasaur way of cooing, he seemed to like it. "I there anyway I can thank you, Professor? He'll be well looked after, and my father is sending someone over to keep him company. I can promise you that."
OOC: it's very good. it's long? i'll take your word for it! [/blockquote]
