Never thought I'd be here, mused a young woman silently. Her silver hair had seen better days- and better cuts- and its only adornment was a thin black strap the held an eye patch in place. The uncovered eye regarded her destination- a Lab building- with amusement, and maybe just a hint of curiosity.
Travel dust coated the bottom half of her boots, and sweat glistened against a ruddy complexion. She had traveled far to get here, to get a fresh start.
And who would have thought it would go so well?
After her gang boss had been defeated, she thought her life was probably over. A young woman living on the streets without the protection afforded by a gang- and her Pokemon- was an easy target to anyone with ill intent. So, in a way, it had almost been a relief when the police had picked her up. At least in a jail cell, especially one as empty as the Midnight City's jail, she didn't have to worry about being taken by surprise. Not that she wouldn't be able to defend herself- those knife imprints barely visible against the leather weren't costume jewelry. But Pokemon made everything messier.
Always have.
But Officer Jenny...
Midnight City's Officer Jenny was a Noctowl 'morph, and her first name was Katie. Katie Jenny was kind of a funny name, which was why no one ever called her anything other than Officer Jenny. Except for Valor.
Valor had no fear of the police, and had showed them as much when they interrogated her on the status of the gangs. Thrown out she might be, but she knew the code of the underworld. If she wanted to survive even a prison sentence, she would keep her mouth shut.
And so I did.
Yes, she had kept silent through the questioning, making good use of her discipline. Something in her demeanor must have tipped Katie Jenny off, though, because the next thing she knew, she was being signed up for a chance at community service.
How that judge okay'd me for community service, I'll never know.
It wasn't so much her history with the gangs that made his decision surprising, it was that anyone at all had taken a chance with her. She scared people now, missing an eye and covered in scars. Scared most of them to the point where they would hurry past her, simultaneously trying to look at her nonexistent eye and pointedly not paying attention to her. A younger Valor might have been offended at their cruelty, but not this Valor.
This Valor didn't care what people thought- what they saw was what they got. She didn't have any use for hiding herself behind pretty facades, and so she didn't.
Let them fear me, just make them respect me.
Katie Jenny had convinced the judge to okay her for community service, a surprise. Even more surprising was the form her service was to take. She was supposed to become a trainer of Pokemon, and learn how to coexist with them.
Coexist!
Valor honestly had no idea how she was supposed to do that. All her life, she had seen Pokemon merely as tools, to be used as needed. To change that, now?
This is gonna be tough.
She knocked on the door she realized she had been staring at for a good fifteen minutes, firmly, and unhurriedly.
Tap...tap...tap
A fresh start would begin as soon as the Professor- Apple Blossom, she thought the woman was called, although Katie Jenny had said she responded better to 'A.B.' Strange name, but really, with a name like her birth name, she couldn't talk. Anyways, the fresh start would begin as soon as the Professor opened the door.

Professor Apple Blossom opened the door. She seemed relatively surprised by Valor's appearance, but didn't look too bothered by it. Well, she did have quite a lot of experience in that category. She'd been met by people of all kinds at this door; Pokémorphs, people with abilities, and the one which had actually geniunly shocked her, a legendary albino Pokémorph from another universe, with his soul on the outside.
No, Valor was no real shock to see. An eyepatch... fairly minor, but it also told Professor AB that Valor had lived rough, that combined with her state. She'd probably missed that eye and gained those scars in fights. The woman hoped this new trainer would treat Pokémon all right.
"Hello. My name is Professor Apple Blossom. Please, do come in." the scientist treated Valor as she would most people, watching her warily as she led her inside. She offered her a seat. "Do you have in mind what Pokémon you'd like?" she asked.

Typical.Valor hid a smirk until the Professor had turned her back. The Professor had seemed surprised by her appearance, which wasn't all that intriguing, to say truth. The surprising part was that she hadn't been recognized. Katie Jenny had said she was sending advance notice, hadn't she? Can't trust anyone. The Professor offered her a seat, but Valor didn't take it. She didn't sit down unless she trusted her environment, and she didn't trust this environment. Not one bit. She rested her left hand on the hilt strapped to that thigh, less out of intimidation than familiarity. She often stood like that when she had nothing to do with her hands, something Katie Jenny had often commented on. "Katie Jenny was supposed to have sent you advance notice. I'm due for either a Totodile or Bulbasaur."Proof would probably be required of her community service, so Valor unearthed the card that had her all of her sentencing information on it from the top of her boot. It held her name, her crimes, the name of that judge, and Katie Jenny's number. Behind the card was a note from Katie Jenny to Professor Apple Blossom. That was odd, she mused. Katie Jenny said she would send this ahead of my arrival. She unfolded the note, and offered both it and the card to the Professor. "Guess Katie Jenny couldn't find a Pidgey, 'cause here's the note."Dear Professor Apple Blossom,
This is Midnight City's Officer Jenny. I told Val that I would be sending this with a Pidgey, but I think it will be safer with her. She recently qualified for community service in lieu of a prison sentence for her membership in a gang, and I sent you to you to get kitted out. I think she would do best with a Totodile or Bulbasaur, although she'll most likely want a Treecko. Call me if you have any trouble with her.
Formally, Officer Jenny, Midnight City
P.S. She'll tell you her name is Valor, and don't ask any further questions. It appears to be a touchy subject.

Professor Apple Blossom's eyes widened as she recognized Katie Jenny's name. "Ah! The Police Officer of Midnight City! So, you must be Valor." she said, examining the girl carefully. In the letter, Jenny had said she would do well with Totodile or Bulbasaur, but she'd want a Treeco. The woman wasn't entirely sure, however, whether Valor could be trusted to train a Pokémon. She had served community service and been a member in a gang, so this might make her quite rough. Well, a police officer had sent her, so it would most likely be fine.
Retrieving two Pokéballs, Professor AB released them with a flash of red light to the lab's cool tiled floor. "These are the Pokémon Katie Jenny advised me to give you. Remember, Pokémon have minds just like people, even if we can't always understand them." she explained as their forms solidified in the red light from the Pokéballs.
The Bulbasaur sniffed the air curiously. The Grass type's bulb moved a little to adjust to the light, and it's face grinned at Valor. The Pokémon red eyes stared curiously into Valor's as it studied the girl, taking a few hesitant steps towards her. She was scary to it, and it felt uncomfortable.
Totodile took in it's surroundings with a swift glance, eyes pausing on Valor. Hm. A new trainer, huh? It studied her warily, eyes lingering on her missing one. She looked dangerous, but she was here, after all. Totodile seemed calmer and braver than Bulbasaur, showing Valor it's pointed teeth in a warning as it approached.

There wasn't much that Valor hated more than authority, but this might just qualify. Suddenly the Professor had all the authority in the world, even condescending!
Valor's rough voice was tightly controlled as she answered the Professor, "Like I said before."
Bulbasaur was right out. The Grass-type was cringing at the very sight of her, which she didn't need -at all-.
She turned her attention towards the Totodile. Now, that Pokemon had potential, as brassy as it was. It didn't hesitate to show her some pointed teeth as it approached, which would have made her smile had she been picking out Pokemon from the gang.
Here, however, she didn't dare show any signs of weakness. Professor A.B. was still an unknown.
"Definitely not Bulbasaur," she murmured, ignoring the cringing reptile.
And maybe Totodile wasn't such a good idea, either. She had gone through at least fifteen teams before deciding on the Grovyle and Aerodactyl, although something told her that she would not have that kind of luxury here. How many Pokemon could this place hold, anyways?
"Let me see another pair."

Professor Apple Blossom nodded. Wow, she'd been quick to ask for another pair. Hopefully, she'd like one of the Pokémon in this set. She'd show her, again, a Bulbasaur and Totodile, but hopefully she'd like the personality of one of these Pokémon better. Returning the other Pokémon, the Totodile looking proud, as though he'd scared away Valor. She then grabbed two more Pokéballs, releasing the Pokémon in them.
The Bulbasaur this time was a little larger than the other, and seemed more confident. However, it did seem kinda lazy. It's eyes hardly lingered on Valor at all. It didn't care very much about things, but looked strong despite being lazy.
As for the Totodile, it seemed alert and active. Glancing about in a swift glance the moment it was released, it walked towards Valor instantly. It seemed more friendly than the last Totodile, and more alert. It seemed pretty brave, too; it's eyes seemed to challenge Bulbasaur, although Professor AB was too busy watching Valor to notice this.

Bulbasaur still doesn't look promising. Why the heck did Katie Jenny want one of them for me?
Once again, Valor dismissed the Bulbasaur after a cursory inspection, and bent to look at the Totodile. This Totodile seemed either a lot braver or less aggressive than the previous one; it showed no teeth, but also no sign of fear.
This Totodile -might- do, but she wanted to check one more possibility.
"This Totodile...he might be the one, but I'd like to see a third Totodile, and perhaps a Treecko."
((Blargh, it's way too early- or rather, late- and my muse is dying. May edit when muse wakes up.))

ooc// Man, you're fussy.
ic// Professor Apple Blossom sighed. Oh, she gave up. Returning the Bulbasaur again, she left out the Totodile and took out two more Pokéballs. She was loosing patience; it seemed unlikely that she'd allow Valor to see any more Pokémon after these. The Pokémon emerged from their Pokéballs.
The Totodile was an energetic little darling. It raced over to the other Water type, seeming to be very speedy for a Pokémon like itself. The other Totodile nodded vaugly to it, and it bounced around the other one, who took a swipe at it. The second Totodile's eyes narrowed, but it didn't want to get into trouble with a fight.
The Treeco smiled as it saw Valor. It sped towards the wall, and clambered up quickly, then looked out at the others. It waited there, not showing anything about itself for now.

((Me? Fussy? Never a bit! Valor just needs a certain personality to keep her in line, and that's hard to find.))
Valor regarded the three free Pokemon with a calculating eye. Treecko wasn't showing any part of his personality, but watching her with the same kind of calculating gaze she leveled at him. He would be a gamble, one that she ordinarily would snap up without a second thought.
However, today, she had Katie Jenny's words echoing in her memory. They cautioned her against rash actions, telling her that she couldn't mess this up, or she wouldn't get a second chance.
This last Totodile was far too energetic for her tastes, and the second one took at swipe at it as she passed him. Valor liked that.
Without looking at the Professor, she made her choice.
"I'll take the second Totodile."
After getting her Pokemon, she would be given a starter pack, if she wasn't mistaken. That's what Katie Jenny had said, anyways. And after the starter pack...freedom.
A new beginning.

ooc// Oh, okie dokie.
ic// AB's face relaxed into a smile. Ah, at last a choice had been made. The second Totodile had been requested, and so it would be the second Totodile that Valor would get. Returning the other Pokémon, she reached up to a shelf, grabbing a drawstring bag from the many that lay there while the chosen Totodile stood, proud it had been chosen. AB placed the bag filled with items in Valor's arms, along with Totodile's Pokéball.
"Right, that's all you'll need right there, Valor. Good luck on your journey, then! Bye!" she said, waving as it was Valor's time to leave the labs and start on her second chance.
Valor may now move on to Route One. She obtained;

Valor absently returned her new Totodile to his Pokeball, and reduced the size with the ease of long practice. Now suitably shrunken, she stowed it in her left pocket. The movement wrinkled her shirt- she smoothed it almost irritably.
"I thank you, Professor Apple Blossom," she told the professor, stiffly formal now. She took the proffered drawstring bag with a little bow, and slung it over one shoulder- the one sans shoulder guard. With the same motion, she jerked a buckle free. Leather straps flew up, and a sheath came away from her arm. Without speaking, she placed the sheathed knife into the professor's hand, and left.
Not a half-dozen steps away from the lab, she turned to her right, and looked behind her. The lab was over with- her journey would now begin!
((Just because it fits with my idea of her code of honor. The professor gives her a Pokemon to protect herself (which the professor uses), so she gives the professor a knife, which is what she uses.))
