Zach strolled along down Route 1, hands shoved deep into his pockets. He watched as his new Piplup waddled along in front of him, looking around him with interest and a congenial smile perking up his little beak. Zach had to admit, the Piplup was cute. The thought that he would someday grow to be a powerful Empoleon wasn't a bad thought either. Zach continued to walk in quiet contemplations, trying to think up a name for his new friend. Off in the distance, storm clouds were brewing. They were walking toward those ominous looking clouds, and it looked like the Plains were getting soaked.
"I guess you wont mind getting wet." Zach murmered softly to Piplup. The little water type beamed and scurried back to him. Zach picked him up so he could look him in the eye. "How about I call you Pippin? We can think of something more manly when you evolve." The piplup chirped agreement, which made Zach smile. "Alright. Pippin it is." He set the pokemon down once more, scanning the grass on the edge of the path. Now that he had his first pokemon, Zach was eager to battle.

An eager little Pokémon hopped bravely forward. Zach would probably be unable to see this little Pokémon at the moment, for it was so small without the flock. He himself felt uncomfortable being away from them, but the young Starly reminded himself that he had left them for a good cause; to persue a life as the Pokémon of a likely future Champion. He had seen many trainers pass by, and, if one seemed good enough to their starter, he battled them. However, of the two he had fought, both he had defeated. Neither of them would be candidates for a Champion, then.
Starly saw Zach. Wow, this seemed to be one dedicated trainer. Nicknames, promises, looking out for his Pokémon... this seemed a nice trainer to have. He didn't even seem to have much of a reaction to the gradually dripping rain. Starly puffed up his feathers, trilling happily as he swooped over to Zach. He got into a fighting pose, indicating that he was up for a fight.

Zach stopped short as Starly swooped across his path. He blinked, confused, as it apparently readied himself for battle. Wasn't he supposed to have to track wild pokemon through the grass and spend hours looking for them? He shrugged. Oh well. this Starly had practically tumbled into his lap, and he would welcome the chance to test Pippin's abilities. ~Battle, battle, battle!~ Pippin jumped up and down, stepping forward to confront the Starly. He was just as excited as Zach was. His trainer just hid it better. "Okay Pippin, use Pound." Zach called. His voice was calm, just loud enough to be heard over the distant rumble of thunder. Pippin bounced forward, leaping up and trying to land on the Starly's head.

Starly gasped. Pippin was faster than he had expected! The Piplup was a good fighter, and would probably prove to be a tougher match than the bird had first antisipated. Perhaps this would be the trainer who finally managed to prove himself able to lead him on to Champion-ness.
The little bird was struck hard with the blow, wincing and clutching his head with a wing. Man, that was hard! That little flipper... well, it was no wonder it would someday be a rock-hard Steel thing. Starly could be fast, too. The Flying type leapt into the air, fluttering his young wings as he became airborne, then shot like a bullet through the air, cutting straight towards Pippin in a very accurate Quick Attack. This Starly wouldn't be easy to beat.

Zach's eyebrows shot up when he saw how quickly the Starly recovered. He would be a valuble asset to the team... if he could be caught. "Be careful Pippin. Watch your back." He called. The little water type was bowled over by the aerial Quick Attack. He was forced into a backwards somersault, but he quickly climbed back to his feet. His grin was not so big now, and the piplup was more focused on his foe. "Try another pound, and see if you can keep him on the ground this time." Pippin nodded, feinting to the left before running at the Starly on the right. This was his favorite part, bouncing up in the air. 'I'd bet he'd have fun on a trampoline.' Zach mused.

Starly was struck on the head again. The bird was a little tired of this. Would it just be being hit again and again? Yes, this bird was impatient. However, this Pound was at such a strengh and in such a position that it caused the bird to go whistling downwards, landing with a dull thunk on the ground. He blinked, shaking his ruffled feathers out. His wings hurt; he had landed on them in an odd way. That was a shame. He cawed, a little distressed. This caw gradually changed tone, pitch and volume, eventually becoming a furious, Attack-reducing Growl which ripped from Starly's throat and cut through the air.

Pippin grumbled as the Growl ripped through the air, sending a shiver of fear rippling up his spine and lowering his attack. He wished he knew some more creative attacks, but Pound was his only good offense.
"Let's switch tactics. Use a growl of you own." Zach called, a little worried. The feeling had been building as the battle wore on, but now he knew for a fact he wanted to catch this Starly. He was spunky, and would be a wonderful pokemon partner. But now Zach was afraid of scaring it away.
While his trainer speculated to himself, Pippin growled at Starly. His growl was a little cuter, not as menacing, but hopefully it would get the job done.

Starly gave a little squirm as the Growl ripped from Pippin's throat. It was so cute! How could he hurt a thing like that? Sure enough, Starly's Attack stat slipped away thanks to this. He couldn't harm such a cute, innocent creature, could he? The bird fluttered his wings, a little distressed that the Growl had worked on him, too. At least the fact that they were both with lowered attacks would lengthen the battle and give him longer to think.
The small wings flapped again, and the primaries and secondaries flicked in various angles to get the Starly lifted off the ground and facing the little Piplup. Starly lined his beak up with the penguin, rolling his shoulder muscles ready to attack. Then, without warning, he pelted forward at full speed, the wind blowing along his feathers as he shot through the air in a Quick Attack.
